The biggest change in new coordinator Mike Zimmer’s defense might very well come here at the linebacker position. Especially after what happened during the 2023 campaign. If you’ll remember, once Leighton Vander Esch was lost due to injury, opposing offenses targeted the likes of Markquese Bell, a hybrid safety, and essentially ran right over the Dallas defense. So what happens now? Well, aside from Damone Clark returning and veteran Eric Kendricks being picked up in free agency, everything else is a question mark. Bell is expected to return to safety duties while Vander Esch was forced to retire. A third-round pick in 2023, DeMarvion Overshown will hopefully make his debut after missing his rookie year due to an ACL injury, but how effective he’ll be remains to be seen. The Cowboys may still add to the roster through free agency but expect the team to also address the glaring size issue at linebacker in the draft as well, perhaps even as early as day two.
